Where it began

Edith showed what it means to be truly seen.

During summers spent volunteering at the nursing home where her aunt worked, Marcy met Edith—a woman in her eighties who was mentally sharp, full of stories and rarely had visitors. They looked through photographs, played bingo, shared lunch and talked about the life Edith had lived.

Nothing about those afternoons was elaborate, yet they stayed with Marcy. Edith showed her that a person does not stop having wisdom, humor, interests or something meaningful to contribute simply because life has changed. Being present—truly present—can make someone feel visible again.

Linneth: the need brought home

Love and independence can still leave quiet spaces.

That early lesson became personal at home through Marcy's grandmother, Linneth. She was mentally sharp, largely independent and surrounded by a family who loved her. There was companionship after school, after work and on weekends—meals shared, stories exchanged and reminders offered when needed. But while everyone was away during the day, her world could still become quiet. Linneth showed that meaningful support is not only about completing tasks. It is also about preserving connection, familiar rhythms and the freedom to remain fully oneself.

Caregiving: a family reality

The responsibility grew more complex.

Later experiences with serious illness and caregiving within the family revealed another side of the journey: appointments, medications, insurance questions and the quiet pressure of trying to honor someone's independence while also keeping them safe. The experience deepened Marcy's respect for families carrying that responsibility—and for the trust required when another person is invited into the home.
